We object to building here
Friends of Eastwood Farm have submitted a formal objection to the proposal by Homes England to build 260 houses and flats on Brislington Meadows.
While we recognise the need for more housing in Bristol, we believe this development would cause significant harm to an important green space with environmental and community value. Brislington Meadows sits directly alongside Eastwood Farm Local Nature Reserve and forms part of a wider green corridor used by wildlife and enjoyed by local residents.
Our concerns
We want to protect this important green space because:
- This site is an important local habitat, recognised as a Site of Nature Conservation Interest. Brislington Meadows contains species-rich grassland, mature trees and ancient hedgerows dating back to the 1800s, and supports a wide range of wildlife observed by the local community.
- There would be impact on wildlife corridors, with the meadows helping connect Eastwood Farm Local Nature Reserve and Victory Park. Development would sever this connection and replace open meadow habitat with buildings and hard surfaces.
- The proposed Biodiversity Net Gain strategy relies partly on surrounding gardens and adjacent farmland. We believe this does not represent a meaningful biodiversity gain compared with protecting the existing natural habitat.
- Replacing natural ground with roads and buildings risks increasing runoff into the brook that runs through the valley, potentially increasing flood risk in parts of Brislington.
- Bristol needs more housing, but brownfield sites should be prioritised. Several previously developed sites exist in the area and could provide housing without the loss of valuable green space.
